MLB Free Agency Winners and Losers

Winners:

• Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies made the biggest signing of the Free Agency period when they snagged Cliff Lee away from the Yankees and Rangers. Adding Lee to an already obsurd rotation has the Phillies as the big time favorite to win the NL. I hate to give them credit but the Phillies have set themselves up for the next 3-4 years. They have both Halladay and lee under contract through 2014 and Hamels and Oswalt for the next 2 years. 3 of the top 8 active pitchers in win percentage are in the Phillies 5 man rotation. Grade: A+
• Atlanta Braves: The Braves HAD to add some kind of power bat to the lineup and they did by trading for Dan Uggla. Uggla is a guy who has averaged 32 HR's and right around 100 RBI's through his 5 year career. Given we only gave up Omar Infante and Mike Dunn this was easily one of the better Free Agency moves in baseball. Got some help in the BP by signing lefty George Sherrill and trading for Scott Linebrink. Grade: A
• Boston Redsox: The RedSox would have had the best off season if it wasn't for the Phillies.  They acquired Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres, then signed Carl Crawford to a lucrative deal. There are rumors they are still looking to add another OF and possible a catcher to replace Victor Martinez who signed with the Detroit Tigers. Grade: A+

Losers:

• New York Yankees: You WAYYY overpaid for Derek Jeter but I understand that's a different circumstance. However, the Red Sox are now better than you are and the Rays are still pretty damn good. You really did nothing to get better and at this point you are forced to look into overpaying for butt chin, I mean Andy Pettitte. Grade: C-
• Washington Nationals: You paid Jayson Werth like he was Albert Pujols and you let Adam Dunn walk and resigns for much less with the WhiteSox. Werth is 31 and Adam Dunn's power numbers are very comparable to Werth. Good effort but no dice. Grade: D

The Atlanta Braves have quietly put together some nice moves this off season. Everyone knows about Dan "Yo momma is" Uggla, but they signed lefty George Sherrill yesterday to a 1 year contract. Now some of you fantasy owners might recognize Sherrill from his days with the Orioles and his consistent 25-30 saves with them. Sherrill is a very crafty, hard throwing lefty who has been with the Dodgers the last 2 years. His stats last year were NOT good. However, lefties only hit around .190 off him last year and I think this definitely bolsters our bullpen. Nice work Frank Wren. Now go get us some help in CF.

The Hawks have been playing some great ball over the last week or so including a very impressive win over the Orlando Magic in Orlando. It would be to easy to take shots at Joe Johnson since the Hawks look BETTER without him in the lineup. I have always been one to take shots so here we go. Joe Johnson is bad and ruins our offense. He isn't worth nearly what we are paying him and his stupid Iso offense is just that, stupid. Since he has gone down the Hawks are 5-1 and looking good doing so. Josh Smith has elevated his game as has Al Horford. I still wish the Hawks would have signed Raymond Felton and let Joe walk. Felton is having a great year in NewYork and who knows, maybe we could have convinced a big FA next year to come here. It is what it is and we are stuck with Joe and his indifferent attitude. I did want to give a big shout out to the Hawks as they have earned it. Keep up the good work while Joe is out because once he returns i for see a bunch of 5-19 nights from him like we have grown accustomed to.

Skip Bayless is really starting to push my buttons. The guy has the BIGGEST AGENDA against the Atlanta Falcons that I have ever seen. He said the Falcons were the 9th best team in the NFL. Are you on drugs? Just because the Falcons don't blow people out they are an average football team? Please. I honestly cannot understand how someone who consistently makes moronic comments continues to GET PAID by the four letter network. I would love to debate him and I am confident I would absolutely destroy him if given the chance. Its bad enough that ESPN favors the northeast and the Atlanta teams as a whole get no love but for him to sit there are continue to put the Falcons down when they have done nothing but win and beat some pretty damn good football teams is an embarrassment to sports talk. I'm sure he is only saying these things to push buttons and get people fired up but at some point it just makes you look stupid.

The NCAA has really backed themselves into a corner with this whole "he didn't know" so hes not in trouble crap. Do you think anyone else is going to claim the same? You bet your ass they are. Not to mention they aren't punishing Auburn since Auburn "didn't know" either. Southern Cal is ready to kill someone right now. They said the same thing with Reggie Bush. That he was acting on his own. Yet Southern Cal has a 2 year ban and is losing scholarships. Does that seem fair? Whether you want to acknowledge it or not this has EVERYTHING to do with money and ratings. The last thing the NCAA and the Networks want is TCU is in the National Championship game. So they are doing everything in their power to make sure Cam Newton plays. According to SEC rules he should be suspended but Mike Slive is no fool. He deferred to the NCAA for the ruling and of course the NCAA says he is eligible. Let me ask you this...How long did it take the NCAA to investigate what happened at UNC? The answer is they are still investigating it!! Yet somehow they conclude in basically 3 weeks that Cam Newton is clean. You are either naive or stupid if you think this isn't about the money and ratings. You heard it hear first that after they finish auditing Bobby Lowders bank they are going to find some "stuff" regarding how Auburn has been paying multiple players for years.

Joe Johnson is out 4-6 weeks bc of elbow surgery. Who cares? Not me. I wont miss his 5-18 shooting games where he disappears. Peace out Joe.

Frank Wren is a beast. Absolute Beast. In case you havent heard the Braves traded for Dan "Yo Momma is" Uggla the other day for Omar "Gooding" Infante and Mike Dunn. Uggla has averaged 32 HR and 97 RBI's a season in his 5 seasons in the pros. Considering we gave up a BP reliever and a glorified journeyman I would say this is an absolute steal. The Braves have added a MUCH needed power bat and with a TON of money coming off the books next year Uggla will get signed to a 4-5 year deal. We have given ourselves a pretty strong core of younger players that could allow the Braves to make a run at it every year for the next 6-7 years. I have been pretty hard on Frank Wren but what a great trade!
